Must-have accessories for Miix 2 8

The very first add-on is the clap-on keyboard, of course. With it, your Miix is also a content producer on the go in addition to a consumer. And who wants Windows in the first place if just for consuming content? And why you still want a consumer only while you can have both in one?

If you don't want your eyes killed by the 8" screen, you should connect it to a large monitor whenever you can. Then you need a USB-VGA or USB-HDMI adapter. I have used some EVGA for many years, they cost me only $20/ea and come with VGA-DVI adapter, nice retractable cable and carrying pouch.

And you need a USB hub. If you need more than 4 ports, you may chain more hubs or get a 7-port one. I like the one from RadioShack, it is the smallest and thinnest, only a little larger than a US quarter.

Now let's put them together, plus charger, mouse and keyboard:

Don't get a big head from above picture; afterward, there will be only one little plug to deal with, neat, no hassle:

Note that I did not use an OTG adapter on the Miix side, only a micro USB cable that comes with any smartphones these days.

Some more adapters you may also need

I like this tiny and cute OTG adapter, the tiniest I've seen:

This right-angle one is also nice:

And this one is a transformer - you can bend it into any shape and angle:

As the Miix charge cable has a micro plug like those for smartphones, you need this adapter to plug it into a USB hub if you want to charge your Miix while using USB devices (see this article for more details on charging Miix):

If you need a microSD card reader, these tiny and cute adapters are handy. They can be plugged into both standard and micro USB ports and the right one serves as the above adapter as well:

All above adapters cost only few bucks and take very little room. They are good to have in general, not just for Miix.

    1. No, if you meant those for Galaxy S4 etc. You need a USB-VGA/HDMI/DVI adapter.

    2. i tried right now my Samsung micro USB to HDMI adapter (MHL- Adapter) so far it does not work. no charging light on the miix and no recognizing of hardware.

  3. Hey yozu dont need any cable stuff for that. The miix has an integrated WIDI/Miracast so you can send the Video and 5.1 Sound to a projector or TV without any cables installed. OK the Device should also be compatible to Miracast.

    It works like a charm...

  4. These Miix 2 8 posts are fantastic. I have arm problems and got one because it was the lightest weight Windows tablet around. Would have preferred Windows 7.

By the way do you have Sound/Recording entries for both internal verses external microphones? I can only see the internal microphone device after plugging in a working microphone, and I know the port works fine for headphones. I know there are disable/disconnected options but that doesn't change anything on mine, and neither does uninstalling/reinstalling. Otherwise the system is great.

No problem with the inline MIC. I also used USB audio/Mic adapters fine.

  5. Hi Sean, I bought a Miix 2 and have been enjoying pimping it out as you have, unfortunately, the one accessory I didn't buy was a case/protector. Dropped it the other day and smashed the digitizer. unit works with keyboard, but no touch and annoying cracks. Lenovo doesn't stock the screen assembly or digitizer, NOONE seems to have it! You are the Miix guru, any ideas where to source?

    2. good tip, looks like they're all out. dunno if lack of spares indicates end of production, their main site doesn't list an 8" windows unit anymore. On another note, what kind of USB hub did you use, I got a Plugable 7-port USB 3.0, but have to use the (non-charging) upstream connector to see devices, plugging into one of the regular ports allows charging, but isolates data, apparently.

    4. If you have a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual (abbreviated as hmm, available in drivers and downloads section for the tablet), you can look up the FRU ID. Lenovo has a authorized distributor (encompassparts.com) for parts. Just go to the website, type the FRU into the box, or go to https://www.encompassparts.com/model/LEN59393605/_/_/Lenovo/59393605/Miix_2 and find the FRU there. If you can't find the FRU in the one linked page, try searching the main portion of the site.

I stumbled across EncompassParts when looking for a replacement speaker for my Miix 2 and I'm happy that I did.

  6. I've had my miix for a few months now and love it. I'm glad I stumbled onto your blog. This may be out of context, but I have a problem. There is a small crack on my miix's screen near the capacitive windows button and since the crack the widows button no longer functions. I have searched high and low for a replacement screen with no luck. I know how much you like your miix and would hate to lose it.... Are you aware of any place to find a replacement???

  7. Great upgrade. Tried the same with a new EVGA UV plus +39 and I had to use a 3.0 Hub with a regular USB plug that goes into the OTG adapter. A 2.0 hub did not work (may be because of the design who knows). Now next step is to use Keyboard/Mouse/HDMI switch to switch between Miix and my PC.
